UNALA highlights its commitment to climate resilience at COP29

On November 15, 2024, UNALA participated in the event “Addressing the Water-Energy Nexus in Climate Adaptation Strategies to Build Resilient Societies”, held in the framework of COP29 in Baku. This event, organized by the Water and Energy Network of the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development (UNDESA), brought together key actors from the public, private and civil society sectors to discuss the critical interconnection between water and energy systems in the context of climate change adaptation.

During his intervention, Gustavo Paredes, as representative of UNALA, presented several good practices that have been implemented to support resilience actions, emphasizing the importance of an integrated management of water and energy resources. The organization stressed that climate change significantly impacts the availability and quality of these resources, which in turn affects crucial areas such as agriculture and public health.

It was emphasized that nature-based solutions are key to addressing these challenges, enabling effective adaptation to climate variations. Integrating climate risks into energy system planning and promoting more resilient and decentralized power grids are part of its strategies to mitigate negative climate impacts.

UNALA’s participation in this event highlights its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (water), SDG 7 (energy) and SDG 13 (climate action). By sharing its experiences and fostering dialogue, which are aligned with global agendas such as the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This event not only allowed UNALA to showcase its initiatives, but also provided a space for various stakeholders to collaborate on the development of innovative policies and solutions to ensure sustainable use of water and energy resources, key to meeting the challenges of the future.
