Guatemalan Sugarcane Agroindustry transforms itself in Guatecaña and presents its most important harvest: a sustainable future

With a clear strategy, the Guatemalan Sugarcane Agroindustry assumes a long-term commitment to the creation of sustainable value through its daily operations, ensuring that every action today contributes positively to tomorrow.

The Sugarcane Agribusiness presented its Sustainability Strategy 2023-2033, in which it assumes important long-term environmental, social and ethical commitments, with the objective of promoting sustainable development in the country. Under this Strategy, the sector established concrete goals that seek a balance between the sustainable use of natural resources, positive social impact and economic prosperity.

“Today, more than ever, we are aware that sustainability is not an option, but the only way to do business responsibly. With our daily operations, in addition to transforming sugarcane into different products, we transform lives. For this reason, we have set new goals and assumed a new direction, so that each of our actions and decisions are oriented towards harvesting the well-being of tomorrow for all Guatemalans,” said Luis Miguel Paiz, General Manager of Asazgua.

Along with the consolidation of its commitment to sustainability, the sector presented a change in its vision, with a focus on sugarcane and the possibilities of producing other products from this noble plant. Under the slogan “because we are more than sugar, now we are Guatecaña,” the new guild identity was presented.

This new brand symbolizes the integral potential of sugarcane, which is converted into renewable energy, molasses, alcohol, organic fertilizers and more, as well as a source of transformation of lives, as it currently generates 52 thousand direct jobs and more than 250 thousand indirect jobs, contributing to the development and welfare of thousands of Guatemalan families.

“This new identity is an evolution of the sector that goes beyond sugar production and reflects the spirit, values and vision of our organization. We want to be a symbol of pride and sustainability for all Guatemalans and an inspirational model of sustainable development for the entire world,” said Alfredo Vila, President of Asazgua.

Behind Guatecaña are the three commitments of the 2023-2033 Sustainability Strategy. The Environmental commitment involves working every day with the responsibility of caring for water, air and soil in all agricultural and industrial processes and includes five main goals to be met. The Social commitment involves promoting the development of employees, their families, but also of the communities and the country, with five main compliance goals. Finally, the Ethical commitment involves doing things well in accordance with ethics and ensuring compliance with our own, national and international regulations, within the mills and in the value chain, and includes three main compliance goals.

Luis Miguel Paiz, General Manager of Guatecaña, said that to strengthen the adoption of sustainable technologies and practices, the agribusiness has developed strategic alliances with local and international actors, forming part of the United Nations Global Network of Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions, and collaborating with initiatives such as the Global Compact.

“We have a clear path, every action we take today and every new goal we set is the fertilizer that will prepare the soil and create the conditions for future generations to enjoy the fruits of our efforts. This is how we consolidate the true value of our work, because we are clear that the future is our most important harvest,” said Andrea Bolaños, Sustainability Manager of Asazgua.
