The Association of Latin American Sugar Producers (UNALA) played a prominent role in the XXXII ISSCT Centennial Congress, held in Cali, Colombia, from August 22 to 31, 2025.

The International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists (ISSCT) brings together scientists, technologists, managers, institutions, and companies with an interest in the technical advancement of the sugarcane agroindustry and its by-products. Each congress serves as a global platform for research, innovation, and experience exchange, where the main challenges and opportunities in the sector are addressed.

In its centennial edition, the thematic focus was on Digitalization, Innovation, and Sustainability, integrated into an academic program featuring speakers from various regions around the world.

UNALA’s Contribution

On Tuesday, August 26, Luis Fernando Salazar, Executive Director of UNALA, presented the paper titled “Climate Change and Adaptation in the Sugarcane Agroindustry: 17 Case Studies of Best Practices in Latin America.” This presentation was part of the plenary session “Climate and Sugarcane,” which also featured experts from Brazil, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Before an audience of more than a thousand attendees, UNALA’s presentation highlighted how the experiences of Latin American sugar mills, documented in 17 case studies, serve as concrete examples of adaptation and mitigation strategies in response to climate change, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

UNALA’s involvement in this international congress reaffirms the leadership of the Latin American sugarcane agroindustry in sustainability, technological innovation, and climate action, solidifying its role as a reference in global debates on energy, the environment, and competitiveness.
