The Annual Sustainability Committee Meeting of the Association of Latin American Sugar Producers (UNALA) was held from September 30 to October 2, 2025, in Antigua Guatemala, consolidating itself as a key platform for dialogue, learning, and cooperation among the region’s sugar associations.
After being hosted in Colombia in 2023 and the Dominican Republic in 2024, Guatemala welcomed this year’s gathering, reaffirming the region’s strong commitment to sustainability.
During the sessions, participants addressed topics related to industry policies, labor inclusion, due diligence, environmental governance, and the planning of shared indicators to strengthen collective action across the sector.
The meeting was inaugurated by Alfredo Vila, President of UNALA, and Luis Miguel Paiz, Executive President of UNALA, who highlighted the importance of this space for sharing experiences, fostering innovation, and advancing sustainable development throughout the value chain.
As part of the program, committee members carried out field visits to various facilities and communities linked to Guatemala’s sugar sector, including Magdalena and Ingenio Pantaleon, where they learned about environmental, social, and educational initiatives that reflect the country’s commitment to sustainability.
During the closing session, Luis Fernando Salazar, Executive Director of UNALA, announced that the next Sustainability Committee Meeting in 2026 will be held in Uruguay, continuing the annual rotation of host countries among UNALA members.
This year’s edition reaffirmed the Latin American sugar sector’s commitment to comprehensive sustainability, driving joint actions to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthening the exchange of experiences among countries. UNALA continues to consolidate itself as a regional cooperation platform that promotes a more resilient, innovative, and responsible agroindustry.
