On July 10 2025, the Association of Latin American Sugar Producers (UNALA) successfully hosted the webinar “Generating Energy and Sustainable Development in Latin America”, an event that highlighted exemplary initiatives from the sugar agroindustry in renewable energy, education, and environmental management. The session drew upon insights from 17 case studies that document good practices across the region.
The event was moderated by Mr. Isaac Cain, member of UNALA’s Board of Directors, and brought together regional leaders and sustainability experts to share experiences that reflect the sector’s strong commitment to community development and the transition toward a greener economy.
Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Iván Vera, senior consultant and advisor to the Global Network on Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions (UNDESA). He emphasized the strategic role of the sugar industry as a key partner in advancing the sustainability agenda. He was joined by Ms. Zaida Solano, Sustainability Manager at LAICA, who highlighted the significant progress made in Costa Rica and the importance of aligning agroindustrial operations with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Several country-level experiences were also presented during the webinar:
Ms. Alba Rodríguez, Executive Director of Save the Children Dominican Republic (representing the Sugar Consortium of Industrial Companies – CAEI), showcased a successful public-private partnership focused on education and child protection.
Ms. Renata Camargo, Sustainability Manager at UNICA (Brazilian Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Association), shared the sector’s efforts in promoting bioenergy and reducing emissions, highlighting ethanol’s role as a clean energy alternative.
Mr. David Loaiza Franco, Environmental Head at Asocaña, presented Colombia’s initiatives in water resource management and biodiversity conservation in sugarcane-growing regions.
This virtual gathering reaffirmed UNALA’s and its members’ commitment to a modern, efficient, and socially responsible agroindustry. The case studies showcased not only the sector’s positive impact on local communities but also serve as a reference for replicating best practices across Latin America.
